What if that $30k had been a boring index habit?

Editorial rewrite of a public second-hand WSB post — a friend treating options as free money with up to $30k at risk — versus $30k as S&P 500 DCA from 2019.

Based on a real public Reddit case (r/wallstreetbets). We rewrote the facts — we did not copy the post. Source

  1. What happened

A friend put up to $30k into “free money” options

An outsider posted that a friend called options a “free money” scheme, claimed a system that “never loses,” and was putting up to $30,000 in. The friend had gone quiet and depressed; the poster suspected the account was gone. We treat $30k as the capital at risk and simulate the boring path. This is second-hand — we label it that way and do not invent a confirmed P&L screenshot.

  2. The boring alternative

    Same capital → S&P 500 DCA from 2019-01-04

We take $30,000 and spread it as equal weekly buys through 2026-08-28, then hold. That matches “invested periodically,” not a 15-minute options trade. Assumptions that are ours (round numbers, start dates) are called out above.

  3. The difference

    Trading path vs boring path

    Trading outcome (stated)-$30,000
    Left from that path$0
    Boring alternative (index value)$58,056
    Wealth vs $0 left$58,056

Vs the stated trading P&L of -$30,000, the boring ending value is a $88,056 swing in wealth outcomes — not a prediction of your next trade.

Blind DCA contributed ~$30,000. SteadyGrow sizing on the same budget ends near $77,517.

  4. Lesson

    What this is (and isn't)

“Infinite money” systems are usually just leverage with a story. Thirty thousand dollars of boring weekly buys will not feel like a system — which is the point.
