The Boring Alternative · I started too late

What if $1,000/month had started in 2015 instead of the thirties?

Editorial rewrite of a public personal-finance case about starting retirement saving in the mid-30s — versus $1,000/month into the S&P 500 from 2015 (a stand-in for “I wish I had started earlier”).

Based on a real public Reddit case (r/personalfinance). We rewrote the facts — we did not copy the post. Source

  1. What happened

    Started saving hard at 34

A public poster in their mid-30s described finally building a serious savings rate — HYSA, Roth, small 401(k) — and asked if they were on track after a late start. There is no “blown up account” here. The cost is calendar. For the simulation we take a round $1,000/month (~$132k of contributions over the 2015→now window) as the habit that could have begun earlier. That is our assumption, labeled as such — not a claim about their exact past deposits.

  2. The boring alternative

    Same capital → S&P 500 DCA from 2015-01-02

We take $132,000 and spread it as equal weekly buys through 2026-08-28, then hold. That matches “invested periodically,” not a 15-minute options trade. Assumptions that are ours (round numbers, start dates) are called out above.

    Trading path vs boring path

    Trading outcome (stated)$0
    Left from that path$0
    Boring alternative (index value)$344,696
    Wealth vs $0 left$344,696

Vs the stated trading P&L of $0, the boring ending value is a $344,696 swing in wealth outcomes — not a prediction of your next trade.

Blind DCA contributed ~$132,001. SteadyGrow sizing on the same budget ends near $446,435.

  4. Lesson

    What this is (and isn't)

“I started too late” is rarely fixed by a hotter ticker. It is fixed by more weeks of the same boring buy. The chart below is what those earlier weeks would have looked like on real S&P data.
